Cruising is about sailing and socializing; the purpose of this trophy is to encourage members to get together on the water and have fun.
The NEMA Annual Cruising Trophy shall be awarded to the NEMA member who accumulates the most Cruise Points during the sailing season on NEMA Cruises. The current NEMA Cruise Chairman shall be excluded from eligibility. Based on the level of participation, the NEMA Board of Directors may decide to award a second place cruising trophy.
You need not sail your own boat to qualify for a Cruise Point, but you must be on a multihull.
A minimum of ten Cruise Points must be earned to qualify.
A NEMA Cruise requires that there be a minimum of three multihulls with at least one NEMA member on each boat. Cruises can be casual get togethers and need not be announced in advance.
A Cruise Point will not be awarded in connection with any organized race with the following exceptions:
-
Participation in a “Cruisers Only Fun Race” shall earn one Cruise Point in addition to any points earned by actual cruising or overnighting.
-
The Black Dog Dash is the least formal and most cruiser friendly of all NEMA race venues. The normal exclusion of Cruise Points for races shall not apply to The Black Dog Dash. If there is sufficient interest in participation, the Cruise Chairman will organize a Cruisers Only Fun Race to be run concurrently with The Black Dog Dash.
Multi-Day Cruises
Any night spent aboard a multihull that is anchored, moored, beached, rafted, or docked in close proximity to other cruise members counts as one Cruise Point as long as the location is not the home port of the majority of the cruise members and the NEMA member is not at the location for the purpose of participating in an organized race.
In addition to the overnight Cruise Points, participants in multi-day cruises may add one additional Cruise Point if a sail of at least five nautical miles was required to reach the first overnight location or to return from the last overnight location. Sailing to join or leave a multi-day cruise does not qualify for day sailing points.
Day Sailing
A Day Sail Cruise Point is awarded when:
A group of NEMA members sail on close proximity with each other for at least an hour and the reason for being together is not part of a race or in preparation for a race.
Long Distance Points
An extra point shall be awarded for cruisers who travel at least 100 miles by land (one way) or 35 miles by sea for the express purpose of attending a NEMA cruise.
Organization Awards
With the goal of providing more cruising opportunities for NEMA members, we are awarding extra Cruise Points for planning, posting, and organizing a NEMA Cruise. One point is given for a single overnight cruise, and two points are given for cruises lasting two to five nights, and three points are given for cruises lasting six or more nights.
NEMA Picnics and Banquet
Attendance at an officially sponsored and advertised NEMA picnic counts as one Cruise Point. The Picnic day counts as a point even if you already earned a point for that day based on actual cruising. One Cruise Point is also awarded for attending the annual NEMA dinner banquet.
Newsletter
Having an article you wrote about cruising published in the NEMA Newsletter earns one Cruise Point per page.
Points Submissions
All submissions for Cruise Points shall be sent by email to the current NEMA Cruise Chairman using the email address listed on the NEMA web site. Submissions must be received by December 31st. Interim submissions during the sailing season are highly encouraged. If you are not sure how many Cruise Points any activity generated, just describe the activity in an email to the Cruise Chairman and the Cruise Points will be calculated for you.
Submissions should include:
-
Your name & boat name
-
Cruise dates and locations
-
Other NEMA members/boats attending
-
Any other relevant information.
Ties
In the case of a tie in the number of Cruise Points between two members, the judge(s) may consider other factors as tie breakers, including but not limited to additional cruising days that did not meet the normal standards for awarding a Cruise Point as well as the overall contribution made by the member in furthering NEMA cruising.
Judging
The current NEMA Cruise Chairman shall be the judge and his/her decision is final.
